A heavy lift is any job where the load’s weight, height, or reach requirement exceeds what a standard crane can safely handle. This might be a single component too heavy for a 50-ton crane at the required radius, a load that has to travel unusually high or far from where the crane can set up, or an oversized piece of equipment with an awkward center of gravity that demands both capacity and precision at once. These are the jobs that get turned down by smaller operators, and they are exactly what our largest crane is built for.
What Makes Our 150-Ton Crane Capable of These Jobs?
Our 150-ton crane, with a 124-foot main boom, provides both the raw capacity and the reach needed for heavy lift work. Capacity and reach work against each other on any crane: as the load moves farther from the crane or higher into the air, the usable capacity drops well below the rated maximum. A 150-ton rating at a short radius does not mean 150 tons at full boom extension, which is exactly why heavy lift planning starts with the load chart for the actual radius and height the job requires, not the crane’s headline number.
How Is a Heavy Lift Planned Differently From a Standard Lift?
Every heavy lift starts with confirming the load’s actual weight, its center of gravity, and its dimensions, since all three affect how it can be safely rigged and lifted. From there, we calculate the crane’s usable capacity at the specific radius and height the job requires, plan the rigging to match the load’s actual balance point, and assess the site for anything that limits crane positioning or ground stability under the added weight of a larger machine. Heavy lifts leave far less margin for error than routine picks, so the planning has to account for exactly how the load will behave throughout the lift, not just whether the crane can theoretically handle the tonnage.

Yes, and this is not optional on a job of this scale. A documented lift plan for a heavy lift includes the load’s confirmed weight and dimensions, the crane’s capacity at the actual working radius and height, the rigging configuration, the ground conditions and crane setup position, and the sequence of the lift itself. This documentation protects everyone involved and ensures the lift proceeds exactly as engineered rather than as improvised on the day.
